Stephen Grellet

Stephen Grellet

Stephen Grellet (1772–1855) was a devoted minister among the Society of Friends who traveled in the work of the ministry perhaps more than any other ministering Friend. Born in France, Grellet fled the bloody turmoil of the French Revolution, and for a time considered himself an atheist and a disciple of Voltaire. But, borrowing William Penn’s works to assist him in learning English, and later having an awakening encounter with the Spirit of Truth, he was rescued from his unbelief and made a dedicated follower of the Lord Jesus Christ. His obedience to the Lord’s leading brought him on four lengthy missionary journeys all over the United States, Canada, Europe, and Asia, travels that comprised a large portion of his adult life. Compiled by Benjamin Seebohm, but taken from Grellet’s own journal, recollections, and letters, The Life of Stephen Grellet not only details his deeply interesting and sometimes miraculous experiences in many foreign lands, but also sets forth the inward exercises and divine consolations that prepared and sustained him in his work.
