Catherine Payton (1727-1794, also known by her married name, Catherine Phillips) was a well-known and highly-esteemed minister in the Society of Friends, whose labors in the gospel turned many from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God. This selection from her journal contains an autobiographical portion, in which Catherine describes her early experiences of the mercies and judgments of the Lord, and her call to the ministry, followed by a sample of her letters which manifest her extraordinary gift of administering heavenly counsel and admonition to a variety of spiritual conditions.

Friends Library Publishing exists to freely share the writings of early members of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers), believing that no other collection of Christian writings more accurately communicates or powerfully illustrates the soul-transforming power of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Letter to a Backslidden Brother

Catherine Payton

This letter was written by Catherine Phillips in 1753 to her brother Henry Payton, who she feared had “strayed from the path of peace and safety, to seek satisfaction in the grasp of empty bubbles, which had assumed the form, in his sight, of something substantial.”
