Joseph Walton

Little is known about Joseph Walton, other than that he was an English Quaker in the late nineteenth century who remained faithful to the original principles and practices of Friends after a time of much division and declension in the Society. Walton’s Anecdotes, published the year of his death, gathers together hundreds of carefully selected anecdotes and extracts that illustrate the doctrines, spiritual experiences, and history of the early Society of Friends. Arranged by subject, and drawn extensively from their own journals and memoirs, he presents a wide variety of extracts that demonstrate Friends’ careful adherence to the Light of Christ, their simplicity of life and departure from the world, their faithfulness under persecution, their views concerning worship, prayer, ministry, communion with God, war, and much more. The result is not only an accurate survey of Quaker principles as they were lived out by generations of faithful men and women, but also an encouragement for sincere Christians of every generation to follow Christ in the narrow way that leads to life.
